Prevention and managent of Ankle injuries
Targeted physiotherapy and rehabilitation for prevention of acute and recurring ankle injuries
About Ankle Injuries
Ankle injuries are among the most common recurrent lower limb injuries. Most commonly they include
Acute ankle sprains potentially including ligament injuries
Achilles Tendinopathy
Fractures
Factors associated with recurrent ankle sprains, injuries include
Loss of strength
Loss of proprioception (awareness) of ankle joint position
Decreased ankle joint range of motion
Impact of Ankle Sprains and Injuries
61% of first time ankle sprains develop into recurrent ankle sprains with 40% of ankle sprains to develop into chronic symptoms including pain, swelling, instability lasting 12 months post injury.
When left untreated, the ankle joint loses it’s mobility and stability causing the body to compensate in day to day activities and may cause injuries further up the kinetic chain for example the knees and hips.
HOW DO WE MANAGE AND PREVENT IT?
-
To diagnose, assess ankle mobility, proprioception, balance and strength of lower limb
Functional assessments including squat , lunges, jumps, hops may be assessed as necessary. -
A comprehensive treatment plan is put together by your physiotherapist.
Address dysfunction through manual therapy (soft tissue release, mobilizing, manipulating joints and dry needling)
-
Completed slowly on machines guided by our physiotherapists
Address mobility, proprioception impairments per assessment
-
These rehab exercises will be incorporated into a whole body program targeting towards a healthier lifestyle whether it’s weight loss, toning up or increasing strength in all other body areas.
